Chelmsley Wood sits on the outskirts of the City of Birmingham. Considered by some to be a soul-less heartless place with few facilities and very little arts activity. Northern Star are trying to change that and for several years have run Tales From the Wood, a project encouraging people to engage with their own stories and the stories of the development of Chelmsley Wood Housing Estate.
Run by Debbie Fenney and the charismatic minister Neil Roberts they see Storytelling Café as an essential part of their programme. In addition to Storytelling Café in the evening storytellers also perform to their lunch club and to local schools. Students from Smiths Wood School took part in Young Storyteller of the Year 2008
As part of the English Storytelling Network Chelmsley Wood Storytelling Café has presented some the best storytellers in the British Isles as well as international tellers.
Storytelling Café is part of a range of activities run by the Traditional Arts Team www.TradArtsTeam.co.uk
